Improving school safety and security were primary focuses during the retrofit of Gaffney Elementary School in Oregon City. For the 1960s-era building, this included relocating and reconfiguring the main office and entry vestibule as a means of achieving appropriate surveillance and supervision. Receptionists and staff now face frontwards, easily able to keep an eye on students entering and exiting the building through new security vision glazing. To extend those safeguards on the interior of the vestibule while meeting stringent fire-rated code requirements, the design team turned to Technical Glass Products’ Fireframes® Heat Barrier Series doors and frames with Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-rated glass laminated to School Guard Glass®. Strong and clear, the fire-rated, forced entry and bullet-resistant transparent systems can withstand 12+ minute forced entry attacks.
