A lot has changed since the Schine Student Center was constructed in 1985, but one thing remains consistent: students need a hub to meet and build community. When Syracuse University met with Mackey Mitchel Architects and Ashley McGraw Architects, it was important to keep students at the center of this redesign. Utilizing student feedback and the latest design best practices, the architects planned a space that is welcoming, visually connected, navigable and open. Fire-rated glazing assemblies proved crucial for these goals. Technical Glass Products’ (TGP) Fireframes® Designer Series Doors and Fireframes ClearView® systems (both with Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-rated glass) allowed the architects to meet requisite codes without hindering sightlines between quadrants and the building’s central atrium. Not only do these systems support fire and life safety, but they also create a cohesive design aesthetic to adjacent, non-rated systems. “The success of these glazing applications,” one architect states, “can be found in their non-unique appearance. Our design team valued TGP’s fire-rated systems’ ability to frame views between spaces, while being non-intrusive and uniform with other interior glazing systems.”
