The latest expansion of the Costco Wholesale Corporate Headquarters stands nine stories and prioritizes connection between employees and the spaces around them. This concept is emphasized in flexible workspaces as well as common areas, including the building’s central stairwell. To meet fire safety and egress requirements along the interior staircase without sacrificing visual connection, architects at MG2 integrated a combination of fire-rated door and window assemblies from Technical Glass Products. TGP’s Fireframes® Designer Series full-lite doors with Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-rated glass offer 90 minutes of fire resistance on multiple levels of the building. Fireframes® Curtainwall Series frames with Pilkington Pyrostop® fire-rated transparent wall panels open the stairwell on these floors. These systems, which include a corner window assembly, run the full length of the interior wall. They provide a 120-minute fire-resistance rating while also allowing natural light to stream into the stairwell. Because TGP’s fire-rated frames offer some of the narrowest profiles available with a fire rating, they provide a close visual match to the non-rated, curtain wall frames used on the north and south facades to optimize natural light, creating a cohesive design aesthetic across the building.
